Masters Open

The Masters Open

This past Sunday I had the pleasure of running the Masters Open. I was the Director, and Kim Dae Yol was the organizer.

Although only 12 people played in the tournament, it was pretty intense having so many talented players in one room. We had 4 former US Open winners! Andy Liu, Young Kwon, Dae Yol Kim, Lee Jong Moon.

There where two things that stood out to me the most about this tournament. Although we had only 12 players we had 4 kids competing. We all know that there are these amazing kids out there that are 6d at 6 years old... well thats a bit of an exaggeration, but everytime I see these pre-teen 6 dans it always blows my mind.

There was a moment towards the end of the tournament that really stuck with me At one moment Mr. Tao came in the room to say hi to his old friends, and everyone was just so happy. The simple game of Go created ties between people that last your whole life. Personally, I have made friends from all over the world, from all walks of life, there is just something about the relationships forged over the wooden battlefield...

My absolute favorite thing about go is that these 12 year olds could play with the 70 year olds and have the two players be equals on the board. This event had a lot of this. It was rather odd but we did not have any "young adult" aged players. Everyone was either around 13 years old, or in their 50's or 60's.

Andy Liu won the first prize of $800

Jie Liang, Jong Moon Lee, And Xiliang Liu where tied with 3 wins 1 loss each. Tiebreaking was used to determine the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place.

Jie Liang took home 2nd.

Jong Moon Lee took 3rd.

Xiliang Liu took home 4th.

I must say i love the quote about everybody being equal on the wooden battlefield. Its quite amazing that thats what happens, and looking over this it makes me want to play go again even though i will never be decent nor as devoted but its a great therapeutic game. The one thing that i must say that still doesn't make it equal is the reaction to pressure. no matter how strong of a player you are there are certain things that come with life experience, with being able to play in tournaments the psychological battlefield if you want to label it. Everything is equal on earth but in the minds its an entirely different story.

I agree with you on that, but The boy i was talking about has played in tournaments sice he was 8 or 9 years old.

I have seen him play many strong opponents.

I know this pressure myself though, today i played a game with my teacher, and somehow i always would play the worst possible response to his moves....( I found the good variations in the game review)

The scene in hikaru No Go is a bit exagerated...I think. Mind games are one thing, but strong players trust their abilities...to bad i am not one fo them.

I wasn't even referring to no go. i kind of forgot it already. I just meant stress. Kids will still be kids, playing since u were 8 or 9 doesn't compare to playing for 5 hikaru 0 60 years. But all the best luck to him. And i find it funny how u realize that, playing the worst possible responses. Looking back can you think what u were doing wrong at the time? Can you remember your thought process? was it just the fact that you knew he was that much stronger? Can you look at the board and ignore the player there? i don't really remember how it works but i imagine if you are able to block out the other player and imagine that you are playing yourself, then perhaps you might start playing a better game... well i'm just guessing here, theorizing if u will. God... i want to play now.. perhaps ill play myself tomm, ill finally use those stones u gave me
